Description

Sunflower Velvet Queen Seeds offer shades of red to dark claret with striking chocolate centres, creating a dramatic backdrop in borders, beds, or as a screen. These tall, easy-to-grow plants also work beautifully as cut flowers. Blooming throughout summer, they attract beneficial insects, and spent flower heads can feed birds over winter, adding both colour and wildlife value to your garden.

Sow outdoors, March-May, where they are to flower, 1.5cm (½") deep, directly into finely-prepared, well-drained soil, which has already been watered. Sow two seeds together every 45cm (18"). Seedlings usually appear in 14-21 days. Remove the weaker plant, which can be transplanted if desired. Water well until young plants are established. Or sow indoors, March-May, 1.5cm (½") deep, individually in small pots of compost. Water well and place in a cold frame or greenhouse. Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions (avoid frosts), before planting out, May-June, 45cm (18") apart. Flowers: June to September.
