Mesembryanthemum Livingstone Daisy, sometimes known as the 'Ice Plant', is a stunning, low-growing annual from South Africa. The name 'Mesembryanthemum' is derived from the Greek for 'midday flower', referring to its flowers that open fully in the sun.

Our mixed Mesembryanthemum Livingstone Daisy flower seeds produce a brilliant array of colours, including vibrant pinks, reds, oranges, yellows, and white. The daisy-like blooms have a glossy appearance, making them glisten in the light - hence the term 'ice plant' (although it is a myth that it can survive a frosty night).

Reaching a height of just 10-15 cm (4-6 inches), Livingstone Daisies are low-growing, compact and easy to maintain. These beautiful plants can tolerate dry conditions, making them ideal for rock gardens, sunny borders, and containers. Half-hardy annuals that thrive in full sun, their long-lasting blooms will brighten up any outdoor space throughout the summer.

Sow indoors for surest results, February-April, 0.5cm (¼") deep, in trays of compost. Water well and place in a warm position. A temperature of 15-20°C (60-68°F) is ideal. Keep moist. Seedlings usually appear in 14-28 days. Transplant them, 5cm (2") apart, to other trays when large enough to handle. Grow on in cooler, but not cold conditions. Gradually accustom young plants to outside conditions (avoid frosts), before planting out into well-drained soil, May-June, 15cm (6") apart, when frosts are over. Or, sow outdoors for ease, April-May, where they are to flower, 0.5cm (¼”) deep, directly into finely-prepared, well-drained soil, which has already been watered. Thin seedlings as required. Water well until plants are established. Flowers: June to September.
